طلبه ای نزد پدر روحانی ماکاریو رفت و از او خواست بهترین راه جلب رضایت خدا را به او بگوید .
ماکاریو گفت : به گورستان برو و به مرده ها توهین کن .
طلبه دستور پدر روحانی را انجام داد و روز بعد نزد او برگشت .
پدر روحانی گفت : جواب دادند ؟
- نه .
- پس برو آنها را ستایش کن .
طلبه اطاعت کرد و همان روز عصر ، نزد پدر روحانی برگشت . پدر از او پرسید : که آیا مرده ها جواب داده اند ؟
طلبه گفت نه .
پدر روحانی گفت : برای جلب رضایت خدا همین طور رفتار کن . نه به ستایش های مردم توجه کن و نه به تحقیرها و تمسخرهایشان . این طور می توانی راه خودت را در پیش بگیری .
